Rich sound, but not full size keys Jan 17, 2010 First, I want to give Amazon credit for publicizing ALL product reviews and not editing out the less than stellar reviews (Like GuitarCenter does on their website). I think that says a lot about Amazon's business integrity (and maybe something about how they are a big enough retailer to be honest?). Just wanted to give my 2 cents on the NP-30 Yamaha keyboard which I purchased about a month ago. THE GOOD: 76 keys, great piano sound with rich bass notes, light and portable at 12 pounds and runs on batteries, sleek looking instrument at a very reasonable price at $300. THE BAD: the keys are not full size (about a half centimeter shy from one octave to the next, a slight hitch (or soft click) when pressing the keys (I've adjusted to this), the adapter costs extra, no bells and whistles- just a few quality voices and piano pieces in its song bank, and for some ppl, but not me, another con may be that the keys are not weighted in a hammer-action style as w an acoustic piano.
Overall this is a quality keyboard at a good price and would recommend it if you are aware of the above considerations. If you are a piano novice learning correct hand positioning, I would not recommend this keyboard. I play a lot of classical music, and the smaller keys are quite noticeable when playing faster passages as well. I have to make a slight adjustment when transitioning to my acoustic piano. However, I purchased this keyboard over the casio keyboards with the full size keys (essentially), because there is no comparison when it came to sound quality: Yamaha wins hands down. One qualifying statement is that I was looking for a non-weighted keyboard and it was difficult to find one with 76 or 88 FULL SIZED keys with a decent piano sound.
a quality musical instrument Jan 06, 2010 The Yamaha NP-30 is a wonderful musical instrument! I bought it for my daughter for Christmas and I was very impressed at what a great grand piano sound it can make. Being only a hack at the piano myself, I can't give you a "professional" review but I can give you the result of a few tests that I think is a half-step up (little music lingo) from kicking a car's tires... Put your preschool beanie on and try this:
1) Set the sound to one of the grand pianos and smash down as many keys as you can at the low bass end and do the same with the very high treble keys. If it sounds like a 3 year has just jumped on an old Kimball console, you're in business. I tried this, of course cause hey, it's fun! Sounds just as dreadful as it should...;-)
2) Zing the keys up and down, white keys and then black ones. Tried this too. Toddlers: 2, Boring Stuffed Shirts: 0.
3) Set the highest sensitivity and attempt to pound a key hard and then try to press it as softly as possible. The latter is not quite as easy (or correct) as you might like but when it does play it's a pretty impressive 'ppp'.
To summarize the sound quality: the two grand pianos are quite authentic, though I can't really distinguish between them; the 2 electric pianos are fully appropriate; the 2 organs are tres cool and conjure visions of "The Church Lady" and "The Phantom of the Opera", respectively; the vibraphone is dog-gone close, especially in the mid range; the harpsichords are in the ball-park; and the strings...uh, er, did I mention how good the other sounds are?
The one thing that tattles on this very light and competitively priced instrument...actually there are 76 of them...the keys themselves. While better than some of the cheap low-end synths, they are still not quite full-size and the "weighting"/action is a tad strange. For a full-time professional this would not be acceptable but for the other 99% of us it's hardly a show-stopper!
So, the envelope please...drum roll...the NP-30 gets 2 thumbs up (because I have 2 thumbs and this is MY review dangit.) If you need totally authentic weight and feel you can spend 2 or 3 times as much and get a full-88 Yamaha model or a higher end Casio. For under $300, most of us will do just fine with this puppy!
Best choice for piano students Dec 08, 2009 I spent days researching the best keyboard to purchase for my children. We have four children taking piano lessons and only one piano! They were fighting over piano time. We had a Yamaha that had 61 keys, but they soon outgrew it. We wanted an 88 key keyboard, but they were out of our price range. The piano teacher thought the 76 would suffice for the vast majority of songs, so that's where my search began. This keyboard has 76 full sized graduated keys. It sounds just like our real piano. It doesn't have all the extra stuff we didn't need or want. It fits in the kid's rooms and is easy to move. This solved all our piano problems! I knew that Yamaha was the desired brand, but there were so many choices. I am so happy with this keyboard! It is perfect for our needs and is worth every penny! If you are looking for an affordable, high quality, and the next best thing to a full sized piano for your students - this is the keyboard for you! Oh, make sure to buy the power adapter and a foot pedal! (Head phones are great too when your siblings/ parents are trying to read!)

Adequate as a replacement of a real piano to PRACTICE Nov 20, 2009 I've been playing piano for about ten years, but I stopped three, four years ago. My club at school plans to start visiting a senior center nearby monthly, and we need people to perform. Since I left home for college, I need a keyboard in my apartment to replace a real piano to practice.
Pro:
1) I love the sound. It is absolutely beautiful.
2) The response is very sensitive. It gets louder when pressed harder, and vice versa.
3) It's an affordable weight for a 110lb girl to carry around. The nicer keyboards with hammer aaction would have been too heavy for me.
4) It didnt come with a headphone, but the volume is good for apartment lifestyle (not too loud).
5) The price is good. The nicer keyboards with hammer action is not a good investment when I only plan to practice at my apartment.
Con:
1) The keys are lighter and slightly smaller than the real piano. The feeling of the keys is no comparsion to the real piano. The plastic key's cracking sound makes me somewhat frustrated when I have the wooden key movement on a real piano in my mind. Again, it's only a "cheap" keyboard. It's already the best in similar price range.
Conclusion:
Well, I say it's good enough for practice. After all, it's only a 300 buck keyboard.
It's affordable and adequate for my needs.

Fantastic product Oct 22, 2009 I am a beginning adult piano player and was a little hesitant to shell out 300 big ones for this piano given the mixed reviews.
But.. I am soooo glad I did!! This piano is absolutely great!! For those who complain about the feel of the keys, I really believe that the feel is terrific and you would only have a negative reaction to them if you were a sensitive life-long player on regular pianos. For those who recommend shelling out a couple of hundred more bucks for a privia, you have to realize that those things weigh 2-3 times as much, and are harder to move around and require a stand. You can play the NP30 casually without a stand because it is so light. Furthermore, the sound of the NP30 is absolutely fantastic!! My in-laws have an upright piano and after playing the NP30 for weeks and then playing their piano I was frankly shocked at how terrible their piano sounded compared to the NP30! Bottom line is, if you are a lifelong pianist or training to become a concert pianist you will probably be disappointed with the NP30 but if you are a beginning, intermediate, or casual player like me you will be absolutely thrilled! I challenge you to find a used NP30 on Craig's List - You will not find one! I promise that I do not work for the piano company or am being payed to write this review.
