Novation UltraNova Dec 04, 2011
By elesdee There is certainly something to be said about this synth, especially if you are into sound design/editing.
Very affordable sound design tool with plenty of effects and modulation capabilities. In my opinion, in the right hands, this synth is straight-plague-type material as in SICK!
Of course you could go spend a grand or more and get a better synth but for the price of this bad boy, it has massive power, especially when creating your own patches. I am not a fan of presets, so the ability to tweak and morph sounds is a must. The editing software reinforces this and is good for visual learners/interpreters of what they are doing to a sound. The fact that this is a feature withe the synth could probably make this a good machine for the beginner and experts would enjoy just the same. Works excellent with Ableton Live in my experience.
The ability to apply modulations and effects at any specific stage in the routing is really cool and makes for some really cool experimenting. When using the synth by itself (no computer support) a lot of the editing is internal but still mostly easy to navigate. The knobs are all assignable according to what kind of effects/modulation/filter you want to control the sound and the ability to tweak and manipulate is pretty vast.
I am just getting to know the vocoder but am really enjoying it's range of capabilities so far.
I read some negative reviews online about this synth but I would have to think that these people have no experience or desire to create their own sounds and so they rely on presets. This thing has crazy potential for synthesis and so I cannot see any validity to the statements that I read concerning this synths limitations or quality. Especially with the support of the software editor, which can lead you into very complex synthesis with little effort. If you are willing to learn this machine, it will be rewarding.
The only downsides I see so far with machine is the lack of FM synthesis as well as the inability to layer sounds or split the keyboard to where you can play more than one sound at a time.

great little synth Oct 31, 2011
By Robson I was looking actually for novation 37 keys midi controllers but they don't do them anymore and I've stumbled on this very expressive VA instrument. I have to say I am very impressed with build quality and the sounds possibilities on this baby. When I started to play i could't stop and didn't even have to look into manual. I'm not gonna repeat all technical specs which you can read by yourself on novation website but I just say for that kind of money you won't get anything better. I have tried also roland gaia 37 key synth in the same price range and it was no competition, roland felt like a toy. With novation you get high quality fatar synth keybed with full size keys, USB audio/midi interface, vocoder and goose mike, big nice LCD display and very well written, good looking software for editing sounds and managing patches. There only three things I wish novation has included - multitimbrality, more polyphony (there is only 18 voices), FM synthesis. Besides these it's perfect, this virtual analog synthesizer sounds amazing and you have endless options creating and tweaking sounds. It is also light and portable (around 8lb) so ideal to travel with, exactly what I needed.
