Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder Aug 16, 2010 Purchased and used the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder at a recent trade show. The audio was for a podcast.
The Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder performed very well. It did a great job of filtering out background noise, battery life is excellent, and the storage provided was perfect.
Great little music recorder using built in mic. Aug 15, 2010 I play in a bluegrass band and have only used the recorder a couple of times. The first time I used it I plugged it into the sound board at the restaurant where we played. The results were mixed, and I don't know why some songs were better than others and one channel was considerably stronger than the other. What concerned me most was there was very little bass picked up on the recording, but plenty of bass on the house speakers. The next time I used it I recorded a jam session outside. The results were surprisingly good. It picked up all vocals and instruments including the bass very well and if more consideration were given to player and singer placement around the recorder it would have been even better. I'll try it next week at practice and I expect it to do a good job in that environment.
Olympus LS 10 Aug 01, 2010 This is a very nice recorder, and a definite upgrade from an older and less expensive model I have had for several years. The only problem I am having is that I specifically bought the LS 10 to record client telephone consultations and there are some problems with recording calls. I bought a Radio Shack adapter to work between the telephone and the LS 10, but there was a voltage feedback noise that came through on the recording. Olympus tech service advised me to stop using the Radio Shack adapter as it could damage the LS 10. Their solution was to sell me a passive device called a TP7 which is an annoying ear plug that you wear in your ear between the phone handset and your ear. This is not comfortable and you cannot switch ears without changing the earpiece too. So although I like the recorder, I would advise looking for a different product if you want to record telephone calls.
The Best One Ever! Jul 13, 2010 This Olympus LS-10 has served me well for a couple years. The battery life is excellent (even with rechargables.) The recording quality is great with zoom-ability microphone and still great with lapel mic. The size is perfect. The weight shows the great quality of the construction and design (very dense.) I have no complaints! One of three was just stolen so I ordered a new LS-11.
OLYMPUS LS 10 compared to H4N - interesting points. Jun 28, 2010 Olympus LS 10.
I have acquired an Olympus LS 10 and find it to be an amazing recorder. It is fluent to use and nicely sized. It does a very good job but there are some limitations which you might want to know as well as some points that might not have been mentioned elsewhere.
1. First is that the earphone output is low. Pushing the volume control to 10 still has the music or speech sounding weak and soft. I used earbuds with a 108 dB SPL at 1KC at 1mw and it still sounds soft to me. You cannot obtain the same volume at the ear that you have in person with someone talking in a room. On the other hand thru an amplifier it is wonderfully loud and clean.
2. The bass is deficient - but let me clarify ONLY with the microphones. A frequency response of 70 cycles (published by Olympus) thru the microphones does not meet the criteria for hifi which is a minimum of 50 to 15,000 Hz +/- 3dB. Of course human hearing usually is far better and stated to be 20 to 20,000. However the response of the upper frequencies is very smooth without peaks in the Olympus. In contrast I am also using an H4N and although the bass extends down to 30 cycles there are three, 6 to 7 dB peaks at the upper end which make that recorder sound jagged or raspy. If you check the internet you will see the published frequency graph for the H4N. A difference of 6 dB is 4 times the power in the peak as compared to the level preceeding the peak or in comparison to the average output. So the H4N is not hifi either (+/- 3 dB) however, I prefer the Olympus because of its open smooth response. In addition you can compensate nicely for the bass weakness in the Olympus in your external amplifiers by using tone controls. However there is nothing you can do for the raspiness of the H4N.
3. Lastly the H4N feels and looks like a Humvee in comparison to the corvette profile of the Olympus. It will fit in a shirt pocket and I used it to record a bit of broadway play by placing it in my pocket. And yes, that might be illegal but I just had to do that once. I could not believe the quality. If I closed my eyes it felt like I was still in the theater. In that instance you face the display against your chest with the mics up to maintain proper L-R orientation. Additionally that orientation blocks the recording LED and display lights from the view of others (ushers, police, the army and the KGB). They can also be turned off in the menu.
4. All in all a worthy piece of equipment and well worth the funds spent. I would recommend it even to my enemies.
