Ideal Companion for Reason Sep 09, 2009
By George Grella

This is perhaps the easiest decision for someone to make - would a Reason users like to be able to record audio in conjunction with Reason? Look no further.
As a stand-alone audio recording application, Record is at the top of the line for functionality, ease of use and sound. Using the same beautiful, intuitive old-school interface structure as Reason, Record is ready to use immediately after installation. Anyone who is familiar with recording on any multi-track device will find this application a pleasure to use and immensely productive. Along with multi-track recording, limited only by your computer's processing power, Record has a standard complement of audio editing tools for splicing multiple takes of any track into an ideal master. It's also excellent for mixing and remixing, with an exceptional mixer interface model after classic SSL boards, complete with built in EQ and compression and elegant effects in-out connections. Although Record has no sound modules other than an extremely basic sketch unit, it does offer the full set of effects devices.
But the details don't matter so much as whether Reason users would like to record in their application. If you have Reason, and install Record, they are immediately and completely integrated. You cannot run both simultaneously - Reason prevents Record from launching. This is not a problem of any kind, however, as launching Record makes the full set of Reason devices available to be put into a rack, just like in Reason. In fact, using Record is identical to using Reason, with the addition that you now have full audio capability. The beta-test version of this application was 99% stable and bug-free, so buy, load and launch with confidence. Absolutely beautiful, a stunning example of good design and functionality. Highest recommendation

Why are you reading this??? Just BUY it! Yes, it is THAT good! Oct 18, 2009
By RECORDROCKS I agree with the other positive reviews here.....RECORD is just fantastic. Rock solid stability and amazing sound quality combined with an intuitive workflow make this offering from Propellerhead an instant classic. There is absolutely no excuse for a Reason owner/user not to get this software.
I have been using Logic for seven years, and it has been a great asset; however, I was torn on how to spend my hard earned money - (Logic 9 upgrade, or RECORD). REASON had lately been sitting unused on my hard drive, because it was taking too much time getting its devices to sound as good as the plugins included in Logic....as well as third party plugs. After trying the RECORD Demo I was so impressed with the functionality and sound of RECORD, I instantly purchased this product.....and now LOGIC is gathering virtual dust.
I read people bemoaning the lack of VST support. Initially I thought this was a bad idea also.....but no more. By eliminating the possibility of 3rd party code (VSTs) being used inside RECORD, Propellerhead has ensured the program runs incredibly efficient and crash-free. How efficient? Well, any modestly spec'd computer will run it just fine.....throw it on a newer dual or quad-core CPU and the available power is unreal.....and for giggles I installed the RECORD demo on a Netbook (which falls far below the required specifications) and was able to open and play back the "Memphis Groove" demo song from the Propellerhead website (this is a 12 track (audio) recording with minimal other devices / processing). So now I can use the Netbook as a portable idea scratch pad when I am away from my main computer. Awesome.
To make this review fair and balanced, there is ONE negative (IMO) to the program: No MIDI out. So.....using the RECORD sequencer to trigger external gear is not possible. You can still take the audio from these modules into the program....but in order to sequence you must have RECORD REWIRED to another host and use the host sequencer. For me, this is a non-issue since I have been 100% virtual on the synthesizer front for some years (and with the new sound engine and mixer, the Reason synths are on the same sound quality level as Logic plugins or high quality VST's).
So if you have read this far the only remaining question is......why haven't you added it to your Amazon cart and bought the thing already?
BTW, I recommend everyone interested in this program try it out and see if it fits their workflow / style ....the fully functioning demo is on the Propellerhead website (demo limitation is you cannot open saved songs).

Record will obliterate its competition!!! Sep 27, 2009

This is the best thing to have happened to Reason users and home studio recording indi-musicians in general. I am speechless to see how immensely user friendly and intuitive this software is. In true propellerhead M.O. these people have ONCE again introduced to the world a super powerful, yet super simple analogue recording DAW software which actually ENABLES the musician in you rather than disabling and mute your creative juices by making you get caught up in frustrating and aggravating engineering issues.
Seemlessly and effortlessly this software works with your system in terms of harnessing all of the processors power in a most effective way possible. You do not have to put up a fight (as in the case of some very well known avant garde "industry standard" softwares) to set up your audio or make your sound card work. I installed this software and just went into preferences and simply pointed out my keyboard controller and my ASIO driver and within a snap of a finger with NO hassles whatsoever, this beautiful piece of software engineering collaborates with my hardware starts working in all its glory.
I double click on my already composed REASON 4.0 songs and they instantly get integrated into record, showing me the entire RACK and midi waveforms. Recording guitar and voice on my REASON midi tracks was as simple as selecting "ADD AUDIO TRACK" from the drop down menu. And with the plethora of powerful effects and units and the Line 6 preamp makes this software the best thing that has happened to me and potentially ANY musician. Not to forget that with your already installed REASON 4.0 you get UNPARALLELED midi capabilities to begin with anyway.
And before the purists go about pointing fingers at me or feel ashamed because a ridiculously simple software such as RECORD is, if not more, but as powerful as the bigwigs such as Logic 9 or Cubase, I would like to point out that I have extensively worked on Cubase and some other analog recording DAW softwares as well. But this beats the panties out of any pro-tools, logic 9 or Cubase 5. Those manufacturers even so much so need to be ashamed of themselves for making home recording so complex for musicians for all these years. Whereas along comes propellerhead with record now about to change the whole paradigm of this industry.
I would recommend to EVERYONE who's wasted enough time & effort with other DAW softwares to try Propellerhead's record and you will have tears of joy seeing how EASY, user friendly, intuitive and incredibly powerful it is. This might be the best decision of your music-recording life...
Go for it!! this is serious value for money and is going to give other DAW nonsensical time wasting biggies a run for their money.
Two thumbs up!!!!

Propellerhead Record/Reason Combo Sep 27, 2010
By james schumacher This is a great program, however their product support has tanked. This product was supposed to include the latest 1.5 Record upgrade, but it did not. I have tried to contact their rupport staff for 3 weeks without an answer (email support only!). I have been a Reason user for over 10 years. A product is only as good as it's support. I would not recommend this product until their support is fixed.
